Somali President has signed new constitution of Somalia
Sunday, March 8, 2026: The President of the Federal
Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed total the Somalia’s new
constitution, after it was approved by both houses of the Somali parliament on
March 4, 2026.
At the signing ceremony held at the presidential palace,
where the speakers of both houses were present, the president said that this
step completes an important stage in which parliament has concluded the review
of the constitution. "The Federal Parliament of Somalia has completed the
review of the constitution, and from today onwards, we are faced with its
implementation and how the Somali people can access the rights and obligations
written in it," said President Hassan Sheikh.
The President pointed out that the constitution is a social
contract that can serve as the basis for efficient governance and political
stability. "This new constitution is a social agreement, and I hope it
will lead Somalia to peace, stability, and transparent and fair
governance," he added.
The president's signature marks the final step in
implementing the constitution, although further procedures are still awaited to
implement this new constitution.
Although the president signed the new constitution, some of
the country's federal states and opposition politicians strongly opposed the
constitutional amendments, seeing them as a move to extend President Hassan
Sheikh's rule.
