UEFA has appointed Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was denied a place in the 2026 World Cup by the United States, to officiate the 2026 Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in August.
Referee Omar Artan, who was selected by FIFA to officiate the 2026 World Cup, was turned away from the United States as he landed at the Miami International Airport. The Somali referee, who is currently the best referee for the 2025 African Cup of Nations by CAF, has returned to Somalia after being deported from the United States.
Referee Omar Artan officiated at last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, as well as one leg of the last Champions League final in Africa. US authorities have not yet explained why they refused him entry to the United States to officiate the 2026 World Cup.
Now, UEFA has stepped in to show Artan, who has shown patience and acceptance of the situation. Despite being denied the chance to make World Cup history in his home country, where he was given a hero's welcome on his return this week, the 34-year-old will instead become the first non-European referee in 53 years to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.
